Day in the life of an SAU Basketball player

These are our 5 C's. They are important for us to remember on and off the court. Coach put it on our wall to remind us and keep us motivated!

This is where all the magic happens! Our locker room is a sacred place for us. We had to earn our spot here to it really means a lot to have a place in here. 

And so it begins we lace up our shoes and get ready for our day!

First we start with our daily free throws. We have to shoot 50 every day and record them on the paper above that's located in the coach’s office
 

We may have a little time in between so we head back to the locker room and converse with our teammates for a few.

  About thirty minutes before practice if needed we head to the training room to get rid of all of our ached before we start. Thanks to Matt the trainer.

That's when we meet up with our Coaches to begin our two and a half our practice. They usually have a complete layout of everything we'll be doing that day.

  After practice we head straight to the weight room. Sweaty and all we get it done.

  We switch up our weight room routines every day to help us get stronger. We usually end up staying in the weight room for about an hour.

 
 After that we're happy to call it a day, we usually head to the cafe after everything is completed.

This is us after earning our spot in the locker room. I’ll admit this was a though day. Through the good and the bad we stick together, we are family and we love what we do.

More Men Getting Plastic Surgery

 In the past few decades we can all say that plastic surgery is very popular. Especially when you consider that baby boomers are aging and we live in an appearance dominated society.

The surprising thing is that is that a study has shown almost a 20 percent increase in a group that hasn’t always gone under the knife that group being men.

The study has shown that there will be an increase to the number because plastics surgery has become more accepted amongst the general public. So men are more comfortable with going under the knife.

The top procedures among male patients are rhinoplasties, liposuction, and hair transplants. Of course, the number of women who are undergoing surgery is also on the rise. The favorite procedures for women: liposuction, breast augmentation, and eyelid surgery. It seems the more we can do, the more we want to get done.

Here is one of the wackiest fads for men in our generation. It was a great year for the male beauty industry, with men's grooming more popular than ever. However, some developments were more left-field than others.

Though I like a man with a full head of hair I’m not sure I like the thought of it in a bun. Especially one you can buy! Yes they have come up with a fake man bun you van install to make it look like your own. So now guys are saying if the ladies can do it so can we. Well think again this is a corny way of adding to a fad that will soon die. So in my opinion stick with your natural hair guys.

Kylie Jenner's new lip line sells out in minutes!

Kylie Jenner on Monday finally released her own lip makeup line called Kylie Lip Kit by Kylie Jenner. If you're trying to catch the deal it's too late because it's already sold out!!!

      Kylie announced the site's launch on social media, of course, and when it opened up to the public at 9 a.m., everything was sold out in minutes, maybe even under a minute, and as of now, everything is still gone. Her coverage of her products was done very well! Jenner urges everyone to keep checking though!

Caitlyn Jenner Is Getting Man Parts Back and Transitioning Back to Bruce Jenner

It is official, Caitlyn Jenner will be transitioning back to Bruce over the course of several weeks. Kardashian stepdad and former Olympic champion, Bruce Jenner came out as trans gendered. Jenner underwent several transitioning surgeries including a tracheal shave and reconstruction of the jawline and hairline to appear more feminine. Jenner covered VanityFair magazine in June as Caitlyn and received approval from fans worldwide. Caitlyn even landed a show on E! After just a few episodes, E! has considered canceling the series due to terrible ratings.

“These few weeks as Caitlyn has been a great experience for me but being a woman is hard. I’m 65 and I just don’t feel like having to learn a new way of life. I feel like Caitlyn was just a phase and I am glad I realized before getting the   gender reassignment surgery. That would have been a tragedy” Jenner explains in an interview. Jenner was a recipient of the Arthur Ashe Award for courage this past summer at the annual ESPY awards and has no intentions of returning the award. “Just because I’m transitioning back to the old me doesn’t mean that I was not courageous. I am about to show even more courageousness when I go back to the old me and try to rehash the missing pieces from my life. Now that I’ve lived as a woman, I’ve gotten closure. It’s now time to go back to be the man that God created” says Jenner. E! has announced that they will air a documentary series titled Getting Back To Bruce, which will air this winter. The series will follow Jenner as she transitions back into manhood and also rekindling romance with an unnamed ex-wife. E! offered Jenner a $2 million deal to record the eight part documentary.

Maoist cult leader 'raped followers, jailed daughter'

 A charismatic Maoist revolutionary raped female followers and imprisoned his own daughter for 30 years after brainwashing them into believing he was an all-powerful and all-seeing leader, a court heard today.

Aravindan Balakrishnan, 75, ruled over a dwindling band of women supporters in his south London communist collective using threats and violence as he pursued his goal of overthrowing the "fascist state”.
                                                                   

His daughter - whose mother was another member of the collective - was beaten, bullied and rarely left the house with Mr Balakrishnan using her fear of the outside world to terrify her into submission.

She never went to school, played with a friend or saw a doctor during her childhood and the power that he held over her meant that she could not leave for the first three decades of her life, said Rosina Cottage QC, counsel for the prosecution. By the time that she left, she was ill with diabetes.

Mr Balakrishnan, a charismatic and energetic speaker, was the organiser of a communist group in the 1970s based in Brixton, known as the Workers Institute, the court heard.

He is accused of raping and indecently assaulting two women members of the group, including one who was allegedly attacked seven times over a period of about 12 years from 1980.

The two victims of rape stayed in the collective too frightened to leave and hating to stay, said Ms Cottage. "They were forced into sexual acts over which they had no choice and were deliberately degrading and humiliating. He seemed to exult in his power over them."

The atmosphere in the collective was controlled by him and his moods, with every woman living a life of fear, violence, isolation and confinement, the court heard.

Mr Balakrishnan, of Latymer Road, Enfield, is also charged with child cruelty and false imprisonment of his own daughter. He denies the charges against him.

The case continues.

When I lived in Wylie I viewed as a very diverse place in pretty much all aspects. So I took a look into my hometowns statistics to see if I was correct. Out of 25 www.money.com  picked Wylie to be one of the best places to live in 2015!

Wylie’s Population in 2013: 44,575 Population change since 2000: +194.6%. With a 21,526 (48.3%) male to 23,049 (51.7%) female ratio.  With the median age being 34.1 years old. Yes it is a family town. Estimated median household income in 2013: $78,207 (it was $58,393 in 2000). Which beat the overall Texas income at $51,704.

As far as races in Wylie go it is pretty divers for the most part even though it is majority white. 61.9 % are white while 16.6% are Hispanic and 12.8 are black with only 5.7 being Asian.

Most people who live in Wylie have had some kind of educational background. 94.9% have a High school or higher. 34.4% have a Bachelor's degree or higher. 7.4% have Graduate or professional degree with 3.2% being Unemployed.

How to Become a Citizen

The debate over immigration reform and eventual citizenship is a heated one, especially on the campaign trail. And this time around is no different.

But how does someone become a U.S. citizen?

The first step for anyone coming to America is to get permanent resident status — or a green card. That can happen through sponsorship by a spouse, family member or employer, by getting asylum or refugee status, or through a couple of other ways like the Diversity. That’s run by the State Department, which randomly selects about 50,000 individuals a year to receive immigrant visas from countries with low immigration rates to the U.S.

Permanent residents have the right to live and work in the United States; they can travel to and from the country and can petition for other family members to receive green card status. But only a citizen has the right to vote or run for office, although there are a few exceptions to both of these in certain jurisdictions. Citizens also no longer live with the threat of deportation.

The path to citizenship generally happens in two ways: by birth (a person is born in the U.S. or born overseas to a U.S. citizen) or through the process called naturalization.

In general, immigrants are eligible to apply for naturalization if they’ve been a permanent resident for five years, are married to a U.S. citizen and have been a permanent resident for three years, or have served in the military.

If eligible, applicants send in the proper forms to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. From there, they get fingerprinted for background testing and then have an in-person interview, where they will be tested on their ability to speak and understand English as well as their knowledge of civics — U.S. history and government.

If rejected, the applicant can appeal or reapply after a certain amount of time. If approved, the process isn’t complete until the Oath of Allegiance is taken during a naturalization process.

Listening Post

The main spot for socialization of “news talk” in Wylie would have to be at the local restaurants. That’s where most people in the town link up to talk news. In the middle of our town there is a chilies that’s where most people go most days of the week.

My mother works an office job so I would say her work area would be her listening post. They sit in groups within their cubicles and have time to talk about the latest news. She doesn’t really go out much so I believe that would be her main point of news circulation. My father on the other hand works in a more hands on job as a maintenance technician, so he can’t really have too much chit chat at work. I would say his listening post would be at the bar with his friends. They talk for hours and get all heated up about the topics that mean the most to them.

For me as an athlete I usually talk about what I see as new with my teammates. The main reason for that is because I’m with them for majority of the day. I would say my listening post would be the locker room or the lunch table in the cafe. These are the times when we have a free flow of information. This is where we discus important topics whether it be sports, fashion and very seldom politics. Within demographics listening post definitely vary.

Wylie Man gets 32 years for sexual abuse of young child

Harlan Wayne Routon, 68, of Wylie, Texas, was sentenced to 32 years confinement without the possibility of parole for Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Young Child.

             From 2008 until 2011, Routon molested a child at his Wylie home when the child would stay overnight. The child out-cried to the abuse in July 2013 and an investigation by the Collin County Sheriff’s Office Child Abuse Task Force ensued.

              The jury returned a guilty verdict Friday for Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Young Child. On Monday, the jury sentenced Routon to 32 years confinement without the possibility of parole.

              Assistant District Attorneys Sarah Preston and Shannon Miller prosecuted the case, assisted by District Attorney Investigator Stephanie Strickland. The case was investigated by former Collin County Sheriff Investigator Jim Blackburn. Judge Richard Davis presided over the case.

SAU Homecoming

Southern Arkansas University celebrates "100 Years of Homecoming" through Saturday

Southern Arkansas University is celebrated its homecoming centennial with “100 Years of Homecoming” this week.

There will be Saturday’s Mulegating, crowning of the king and queen, a Muleriders football game and a baseball championship ring ceremony.

 Students will have daily homecoming-related activities, including a 6 p.m. Monday pep-rally in the Greek Theatre, a Tuesday night drive-in movie at the Reynolds Center parking lot, and the popular Great SAU Campout and Bonfire Friday night.

Other weekday events include the Rankin College of Business’ third annual “Light for the Fight” ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Monday. SAU’s new Tuesday night Team Study initiative will host a centralized celebration and study session in the Reynolds Center Grand Hall.

Also, the 32nd annual Murphy Lecture will feature CNN’s Christine Romans at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Harton Theatre.

UALR: 4 charged in assault, robbery

          The University of Arkansas at Little Rock said four of the five minors who attacked a student Wednesday afternoon have been arrested and charged.

          Two were charged with robbery and assault, and the other two were charged with assault. The fifth person had not been arrested as of Thursday afternoon.

Names and ages of the five have not been released.

           According to the university, the student was assaulted about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near the Lot 10 exit gate on Campus Drive East as he attempted to walk toward the center of campus

           The victim was hit in the face before his cellphone and wallet were stolen, said University police.Williams said the university was working with the Little Rock Police Department on the case.

This school was originated in 1884 and is one of the 15 colleges and schools located in Little Rock, Arkansas. Majority of students rate the safety on campus 1 out of 5 stars, 1 being the worst.

Based on college factual the overall campus scored a D in its campus safety. Based on research of government information, Arkansas Baptist College is a very dangerous place to study. Cyclist to ride Route 66 inspiring others

Danielle Girdano of Nevada plans to encourage people to live a healthier lifestyle hitting the highway next month seeking to set a second world record since she gave up a sedentary lifestyle as an unhealthy woman weighing 400 pounds.

Girdano, 37, will attempt to ride old Route 66 from Chicago, IL, to Santa Monica Pier in Las Angeles, CA, in fewer than 44 days. The ride is a distance of about 2,400 miles.

She would like to draw attention to childhood obesity by doing this. She wants to raise awareness to help others on a path to a healthy life.

Through diet and movement, she dropped 100 pounds before ever stepping into a gym, and when she did she was introduced to a spin class. From that point, her focus turned to cycling as a main form of exercise.

She will be wearing a monitor that measures calories burned and can adjust her daily diet accordingly. In addition, the 37-year-old plans to take a variety of clothing to accommodate changes in weather, such as the Midwest cold and rain along the route.

The ride route has been submitted to World Cycling Federation for approval and will be marked on global positioning satellite equipment to ensure that the route was followed.

Girdano is looking to depart Chicago on Sunday, Sept. 20, depending on weather. Riding for a new world record, while being another personal accomplishment, is a means to draw attention to encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles before they have irreparable damaged themselves.

The Route 66 ride will be tracked daily on www.highwaysforhealth.com, a web site that promotes healthy lifestyles. Proceeds from the ride will go to help fund Highways for Health initiatives that include fitness programs, community gardens, educational materials and children’s bicycle giveaways.

 “One of my hopes is that we inspire someone,” Girdano declared.

Man Dies in Highway 78 Wreck

Man died on highway 78 last week after pulling in front on a trailer truck.

The wreck happened on Thursday August 6 around 2 p.m. while the victim was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban.

William Stufflebean, 46, of Irving, was pronounced dead on the scene. Driver of a 2000 Freightliner also involved in the wreck was Jaskinder Khangura, 38, of Wylie.

The tractor-trailer rig impacted the driver’s side of the Suburban, ripping the vehicle open.

The DPS is still investigating the wreck.

Lt. Chris Harvey of Collin County Sheriff’s Office reports that the wreck remains under investigation. No other serious injuries were reported.

                                                      Following Twitter News for 24 Hours

           In this assignment we had to search through Twitter to find a news story to watch for 24 hours. I chose a story using the hashtag #refugeecrisis. This “refugee crisis” refers to the Syrian refugee crisis. This crisis started in March 2011 with anti-government demonstrations, these quickly escalated into violent crackdowns from their government. The “rebels” began to fight back, with time passing a full blown civil war had erupted. Many people have been killed and the majority of Syrian refugees are living in Jordan and Lebanon. 

            The first tweet I encountered was from @ChinaXinhuaNews which first showed a photo a little boy that had washed up on shore, as well as a picture of our President Obama. This tweet was the most moving of all and proclaimed how urgent it is for the US to intervene and how little they’re doing to help. The second tweet comes from the same source @ChinaXinhuaNews 5 hours later reporting that developing countries such as Brazil, Venezuela and Chile are stepping up to help refugees while the west still does nothing. 8 hours later @AlexSalmond tweeted on how the UK had the capacity to help these people. Which raises the question of why is nothing being done. Around the same time @ColdWar Tweeted a picture depicting Arabs telling the Syrians to leave their country. This symbolizes the real situation amongst the two countries. 20 hours later @GeorgeChen twitted that Demark wants refugees to stay out! @PhelimKine tweeted that China believes the crisis in Europe is due to western democracy almost 23 hours later.

            After following the story it has become clear to me that developing news like this is basically the blame game. With each hour the new story was on who was doing what and who wasn’t. Instead of telling stories of the hardship these people are enduring they tell stories of the countries who refuse to help them and of the hard work of others.

            My Definition of News

My definition of news is information introduced to me that applies to me and my certain interest at the time. Just because its news to someone else doesn’t mean its news for everyone. Pop culture, the music industry, sports, and fashion trends are usually my main intake of news on a day to day basis, through mediums such as my cell phone, magazines and even the radio. I'm sure as I grown and change in my demographic group my definition of news and news sources will change because my priorities will along with it.

            My main source of the news usual comes from social media such as Facebook, Instagram and even Twitter .The news I prefer applies in my life in many ways basically the way I talk and dress are heavily influence by the “news” I intake, as well as many of my peers. Even my goals are affected by the sports news I watch, because it applies to my basketball career.

            The main reason I refrain from watching mainstream news like what my parents watch, like CNN is because it scares me and gives me a false view of the world. They constantly portray stories of terror and act of violence that distorts my view about what’s actually happening around me. I would rather watch news that “keeps it real” rather than news that just wants to sell the biggest story.
